The most important people...

The most important people in the world: block captains. Why?

We are the local connection to the political system. The political system determines public policy. There are only two powers in politics:

1. Money
2. People

Take responsibility for our future. Be a block captain. And do it your way.

Paulson profited from rule change that led to collapse

...Many events in Washington, on Wall Street and elsewhere around the country have led to what has been called the most serious financial crisis since the 1930s. But decisions made at a brief meeting on April 28, 2004, explain why the problems could spin out of control. The agency’s failure to follow through on those decisions also explains why Washington regulators did not see what was coming.
On that bright spring afternoon, the five members of the Securities and Exchange Commission met in a basement hearing room to consider an urgent plea by the big investment banks.
They wanted an exemption for their brokerage units from an old regulation that limited the amount of debt they could take on. The exemption would unshackle billions of dollars held in reserve as a cushion against losses on their investments. Those funds could then flow up to the parent company, enabling it to invest in the fast-growing but opaque world of mortgage-backed securities; credit derivatives, a form of insurance for bond holders; and other exotic instruments.
The five investment banks led the charge, including Goldman Sachs, which was headed by Henry M. Paulson Jr. Two years later, he left to become Treasury Secretary.
A lone dissenter — a software consultant and expert on risk management — weighed in from Indiana with a two-page letter to warn the commission that the move was a grave mistake. He never heard back from Washington.
One commissioner, Harvey J. Goldschmid, questioned the staff about the consequences of the proposed exemption. It would only be available for the largest firms, he was reassuringly told — those with assets greater than $5 billion.
“We’ve said these are the big guys,” Mr. Goldschmid said, provoking nervous laughter, “but that means if anything goes wrong, it’s going to be an awfully big mess.”... NYTimes

Credit crunch scare used to steal more taxes

Have you had enough of supply-side economics yet? Think about it. Which is the reason that a business expands?

a. someone gave the boss a bunch of free taxpayer money.
b. customer orders exceed production capacity.

The answer is that our economy is demand driven. When Reagan first campaigned in primaries on supply-side economics, George H. W. Bush called it "voodoo economics." The wall street "geniuses" have run off with billions of investor money, now the institutions are failing, and they want the taxpayer to pump more money to the top (see choice a. above). If we don't give them our wallet, "there will be a credit lockdown! Just look at the crunch now! " Read on for more perspective on this:

...The bottom line is that we have badly over-leveraged banks who are on the edge of collapse and we have a credit tightening due to an economic downturn. These problems are related, but even if we could snap our fingers and make the banks healthy again tomorrow, we would still have a serious credit problem due to the recession. In other words, many of the businesses and people who have been appearing on news shows because they could not get credit would still not be able to get credit. (Although they probably will not be appearing on the news shows once the bailout passes.)

Just to remind everyone the cause is the loss of more than $4 trillion in housing equity due to the collapse of the housing bubble. The collapse of this bubble has not only devastated the construction and real estate market, it also has forced consumers to cut back. Tens of millions of homeowners no longer have any equity against which to borrow. Even those who still have equity realize that they will have to increase their savings to support themselves in retirement.

And all this came about because the experts who are now insisting that we need a bailout had previously insisted that there was no housing bubble and that everything was just fine. It is always important to keep things in context. -- Dean Baker on Huffington

Bailout is for Wall Street, not Main Street.

Bailout will make things worse

If this bill passes, it will be a profound referendum on the dominance of money over democracy in America. That - and that alone - would be the only thing an objective observer could take away from the whole thing. David Sirota

Finance Fatcats Live Large as Firms Crumble

Thousands of employees are prepping their resumes and many more people are left to contemplate their dwindling nest eggs. But for the companies' executives, men who months ago were given multi-million dollar bonuses despite peering the devastation on the horizon, there is little to worry about. ABCNews

Jim Gerlach: Largest FEC Fine in Pennsylvania History

In April 2007, Jim Gerlach agreed to pay a $120,000 fine to the Federal Election Commission (FEC) for violation of Federal Campaign Finance Laws. This penalty constituted the largest federal fine ever imposed on a member from Pennsylvania, and, according to the FEC, the third largest issued against a sitting U.S. lawmaker since 1980. more...

The economic military draft

The U.S. is fighting oil wars that benefit only one section of corporate America. I don't want want my son enticed into signing and then being forced into criminal acts to save a carbon-auto system that should be dismantled, not saved.

The Army recruiter has convinced my 19 yr old son that he is his friend. He is tempting him with a $15,000 signing bonus and full college scholarship.

I love my son. I will fight to keep him. The uncertainty and worry is wearing me down.

Wednesday, July 30, 2008

It's too hot

Had enough of the heat?
Had enough of traffic and road-work?
Had enough of oil wars?

What is the common denominator? Our subsidized system auto-and-sprawl. How subsidized? We pay for the problems, oil and auto companies take the profits. Why? They have too much influence on public policy. Why? Too many people are staying home and not voting.

Want to do something about it?

1. Become a block captain.
2. Get a voter list of your block.
3. Talk to dems who have not voted.
4. Get absentee applications for college students.
5. Register voters.
6. Log on to BarackObama.com and organize an event.

Roggio impressive in person

Bob Roggio gave a talk at the reception last Thursday and took some questions. I was impressed. Bob focused on education, health insurance, and the Iraq war.

He reiterated what even Republicans admit to be true. That investment in early childhood development pays dividends many times over. He also advocated more public support for higher education.

He likes the idea of single-payer health insurance, but feels it is not feasible politically right now. He would support a universal plan in the interim.

Bob is refreshingly honest about the Iraq war. He does not have a solution, but explained that after meeting with some of our wounded armed services people, he is highly motivated to work to bring the war to an early end.

Bob is engaging and soft-spoken. His remarks were focused and organized. He has the guts to say we cannot drill our way out of high gasoline prices. It will be hard for Gerlach to accuse him of waffling or pandering.

The campaign seems in good shape as well. Bob recognizes the importance of Berks voters and has a plan to win them.

I recommend we get out the vote and put him well over the top in West Whiteland.

Free bus to the rail stations

We could take dozens of cars off the road and alleviate the parking problems at the Whitford and Exton SEPTA rail stations with one simple solution. We need to revive the circulator bus that takes people to and from the stations during rush hour.

Public transportation is only successful when it is dependable. This time we should insist on a committment to success. The buses should be consistently on-time. They should also be fare-free. Fare-collection is an unnecessary burden on drivers and slows down operation. In addition, there is a lot of expense and frustration associated.

This service, combined with the DVRP Emergency Ride Home Plan . Would solve transport and parking problems for many. SEPTA would save by not having to invest as much in parking expansion and maintenance. Everyone would benefit from the reduced traffic.

For more info on public transit see the excellent TMACC site.

Volunteer Recruitment?

I was more than a little aggravated when I went to our polling place today [4/22]. A table was set up with a sign that said, "Support the Democratic Party in November." The table was filled with Hillary Clinton pamphlets. There was nothing for Obama. The message that gave me was, "If you're an Obama supporter don't bother signing up." I was really annoyed but didn't want to get into it with the person there because [my son] was with me. Very very disappointing. Why would they want to drive away potential supporters? - M.K. Our blog is back!

Hi everyone,

Hope you didn't forget to vote today. Good job!

Our blog was attacked, but we survived and we are back in business.

Check our numbers box on the right... we are up to 1,093 Dems from 919 last fall. And we have two new block captains in the last couple weeks. In addition, I may have found a committeeperson to replace me when I move to Philly sometime in the next few months.

Don't be afraid to be a block captain! Who is going to criticize you? If they can do better, let them step up!

Current block captains. I will be sending out updated lists. This may take weeks. If you are in a hurry, let me know. Also, I have a lot of notes from canvassing that will never make it into the database... like who is nice and who is not. I will be happy to come over and go over your list and compare notes if you like.

Your neighbor's voice

Before Obama came on the scene I was really looking forward to Hillary running. I just really hated her campaign tactics from the get-go. Having her people infiltrate other candidates public forums to put them in a bad light seemed unneccessarily underhanded to me so early on. I really liked Edwards but it just wasn't his time.

I was concerned about Obama's lack of experience but despite Clinton's claims, she doesn't have a lot more experience than he does. Frankly, none of the candidates has experience being a president so the next question for me is leadership and connections. Obama has proved he can pull people together. I'm reading his first book now and it's a little bit self-serving but insightful into his good character nonetheless.

I kept going back and forth, reading as much as I can about both candidates but the continued negative campaign tactics and the Bosnia under fire thing really pushed me over the fence and squarely into the Obama camp. As a woman who had to struggle to be successful so my daughter doesn't have to, Hillary still resonates with me and if she turns out to be the popularly selected Democratic candidate than I'll wholeheartedly support her.

I just think there's more to selecting a candidate than being a woman or being a minority. The bottom line is that we have been crying out for leadership with integrity and I think we're most likely to get that from Obama so unless I see otherwise from him, he's getting my vote in the primary.

Thanks for sharing your thooughts with me. All in all this whole thing has been so good for Democrats and the election process, hasn't it?

Bob Roggio on the Environment

The Bush administration has ignored the imminent threat posed by Global Warming. I believe that America should lead the global fight against this environmental peril. We need aggressive domestic policy to reverse the devastating trends, and must cooperate and lead on the international stage. Clean air, water, and the preservation of our natural environment must become a priority. We all share the responsibility of protecting our environment for the future generations.

Obama Excitement

About 250 people showed up tonight in West Chester at the opening of an Obama campaign office. Former Senator Harris Wofford spoke and gave some historical perspective.

The Obama campaign is bringing new voters, independents, and some Republicans to our party. We should welcome them and keep them active for the long term. During the excitement we should be recruiting block captains and volunteers.

Remember - March 24th is the deadline to postmark a registration. You can download and print the form from our blog.

Bob Roggio on Iraq

The war in Iraq was a mistake. Over the past 6 years, almost 4,000 brave troops have been killed, and close to 20,000 more injured. We have spent hundreds of billions of dollars, while ignoring the very real domestic needs of our country. President Bush continues to ask for more money, and more troops, but has no new ideas to win the peace. I will fight to end this war, and bring our troops home responsibly, and with
honor.

Outfoxed on March 18 Examines how media empires, led by Rupert Murdoch's Fox News, have been running a "race to the bottom" in television news. Money corrupts politics

George Monbiot spells it out. Big money controls a great deal of our democratic process.

That is why we need block captains and email addresses. Last week we added four names to our email list. With an electronic network, we can cut down on phoning, TV, and mailing. These expensive techniques require extensive fundraising. Fundraising puts the voter in a passive role and makes the candidates vulnerable to big money control.

If you want to get the money out... get the people in. We will be canvassing again soon. Join us.

Wednesday, January 30, 2008

Get our candidates on the ballot !

Please take a minute to sign nominating petitions when we come to your door. Candidates and volunteers will be circulating petitions in the next few days. The deadline is approaching fast.

Sign and then print your name as it appears on your voter registration, and in the address field please put West Whiteland Twp., not West Chester or Exton. And please, no ditto marks.

Thanks!

Roggio corrects a misquote...

Thanks for the link. However you have a quote on your sight from the Phoenixville News quoting me as saying I would vote to "repeal the Bush tax cuts." What I actually said is that I would vote to "repeal the Bush tax cuts for individuals making over $300,000 per year. Dan Kristie has admitted this mis-quote and has printed a correction. I am sure he will verify this. There is a significant difference between the 2 quotes.
Thanks for anything you can do to correct this.

New Block Captain on Tall Pines

Another democrat has stepped up and agreed to be a block captain. This is great news. Being a block captain is easy and fun.
First, since most streets do not have one, there is no way you can do less than what is being done now. If a block captain gets one democrat to vote who would not have otherwise, then he/she has made a big difference. Recently, we dems have won local races by margins of seven votes and twelve votes.
Second, block captains are the most important people in the world. Why? because they remind people to vote. They connect their neighbors with our email networks. If we want to reduce the grip of big money on our party, we have to reach the voters without annoying and expensive TV, mail, and phone banking.
Third, talking with neighbors is a lot more interesting than watching the corporate pundits on TV. Our neighborhood canvassing parties are good exercise and lots of fun.

Mike Liebowitz in the race against Gerlach

“...I know the 6th District needs a change,” said Mr. Leibowitz, who also sought the Democratic nomination in 2006. “I believe many voters in the district have grown weary of Republican policies and have become more open to Democratic values...”

“...I learned a great deal from talking to the citizens of the district,” said Leibowitz, a graduate of Villanova Law School. “To beat Jim Gerlach we really need a candidate who has not been poisoned by the political process....”
